Create the Perfect Minimalist Kids Bedroom with Scandi Inspiration
Ah, Scandinavia. From the heartwarming hygge vibes to the stripped-back minimalism, we take a lot of inspiration from our Nordic friends.
In fact, here at Cuckooland, we're pretty Scandi-mad. Scandinavian culture commonly revolves around comfort, practicality, and simplicity – and that's a perfect combination when it comes to kids furniture.
If you'd like to create a minimalist kids bedroom, look no further. I've got heaps of tips to perfect the look – oh, and plenty of Scandi-inspired pieces to give you a head start…
Create a cosy 'Hygge' den to relax
If you're a fan of Scandinavian lifestyle, you'll know that 'Hygge' is all things cosy and comfortable. And since it translates to the word 'fun' in English, it also focuses on what's really important – having a good time.
To create a Scandi-inspired kids bedroom, it's important to combine comfort with creativity. As your kids will relax in their bedroom after a long day at school, it should be a place they're more than happy to kick back and unwind.
Loft beds can help you create a Hygge-inspired den. As the bed is elevated, it frees up space underneath to create a lovely zone to chill out. Throw in a comfy chair or beanbag, some soft lighting, and some cuddly bears – and you have a perfect den that just oozes Hygge!
Keep the colour palette neutral
Simple and neutral colours are a staple of Scandinavian design. To really create an authentic Scandi-inspired room, you'll need to stick to a stripped-back colour palette: whites, greys, and wood tones are ideal.
For a kids bedroom, grey furniture pieces are perfect. Grey is neutral enough to give you that calm and minimalist feel – but it won't show up messy little handprints as easily as white does!
Take a look at the Dennis Wardrobe in Concrete Grey (below). True to the essence of Scandinavian culture, it's efficient design will help you make small spaces seem larger – and big spaces even bigger!
Add touches of neutral wood
Classic Scandinivian design involves a lot of wood. Whether it's wood flooring, walls, or furniture, emphasising any wooden features will give you that stripped-back Scandinavian feel.
Not just any old wood, though. Scandinavian furniture generally sticks to lighter wood tones – and leaves it unfinished for that authentic and rustic look.
With that in mind, the Vox Nature 2 Door Wardrobe (pictured below) is the perfect addition to any Scandi-inspired kids bedroom. The white tones will help you maximise the bedroom's natural light, while the dreamy oak effect will add a touch of warmth.
Go clutter-free with underbed storage
A key part of Scandinavian culture is clutter-free minimalism. Think Marie Kondo – if something doesn't spark joy within you, it's not worth keeping.
Okay, so while that might not apply for certain things (like an iron, for example), it's a great mentality for a Scandi-inspired kids bedroom. And while it's easier said than done, there are plenty of clever furniture options to help you keep any clutter at bay.
Trundle beds are one of the best inventions since sliced bread. As the trundle drawer slots underneath the mattress, it's the perfect way to neatly hide any messy and unseemly clutter.
Keep belongings organised
Messy books and toys could seriously get in the way of a Scandi-inspired kids bedroom. As Scandinavian design is fuss-free and neat, you'll need to keep any belongings tidy.
With adaptable storage compartments, the Lifetime Customisable Bookcase (below) is ideal for any kids bedroom. You can either add doors or leave the drawers open – it's entirely up to you! And with it's lush pine and birch material, it'll look wonderful in any Scandi-inspired bedroom.
Maximise space with efficient furniture
If there's anything we've learned from a certain flatpack furniture shop, it's that efficiency is essential in Scandinavian design. Clever multipurpose furniture means you can save on space – which is perfect for keeping bedrooms simple.
Take a look at this Trasman Girona Mid Sleeper Cabin Bed (below). With an extendable desk that tucks away under the bed, it's the ultimate space-saving solution. Kids can get their homework done and then make the most of all the space once they're done.
It has heaps of shelving to neatly store any clutter, and it's subtle Cascina wood effect is perfect for nailing that effortlessly-cool Scandinavian feel.
