French Country Cottage Bedroom Decorating Ideas

French Country Cottage Bedroom Decorating Ideas

French Country Bedroom, french country bedding, french country decorFrench country decor, like most of farmhouse styles, can vary greatly. French country decor can range from super elegant (think old world chateaux) to simple and rustic (think cottage in Provence). One rule that defines the look of a French country room, however, is how the decor is always a seamless blend of rustic and refined. French country style is both effortlessly elegant and homey and welcoming.

Designing a French country bedroom can seem pretty intimidating at first, especially if you're looking at all the perfectly styled rooms on Pinterest. Those rooms may look perfect and impossible to achieve in your own home, but it's really not. Here are some good tips for creating a beautifully elegant, beautifully welcoming French country bedroom!

This post contains affiliate links. We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites. You can read my full disclosure policy here.

12 Essential Elements of a French Country Bedroom

1. Use light-colored neutral paint on the walls.

One trademark of a French country style bedroom is the neutral colored walls. Whether you choose a warm neutral (like cream or beige) or a cool neutral (like gray), neutral walls are a must. If you need help finding the right color for your room, go check out my Modern French Country Paint Guide. It's full of great paint colors!

2. Choose a more refined headboard.

The bed should be the focal point of your bedroom, and your headboard needs to be the star. Several styles of headboards would work beautifully in a French country style room, but tufted headboards and vintage, painted headboards seem to be the most popular. Surprisingly, you don't have to spend a lot of money on a beautiful headboard! Here are several options for affordable headboards that would look amazing in any French country style bedroom:

French Country Headboards:

3. Add a vintage piece of furniture.

The French love their antiques and family heirlooms. You can't have a French country style bedroom without incorporating at least one piece of vintage or antique furniture. What about a french country chandelier? Or, it can be something as simple as a bedside table or something as refined as an antique vanity (I have my grandmother's in my bedroom). Whatever it is, it will certainly add that old-world feel that is such a hallmark in French country design!

4. Frame your windows with pleated linen curtains.

Gorgeous pinch-pleated curtains are a must in a French country bedroom! The fabric of the curtains makes a big difference, too. Linen is pretty much a staple fabric in French country design, but cotton is also pretty widely used. Both linen and cotton curtains hang beautifully and linen has a gorgeous texture. Personally, though, I can't afford linen curtains (I wish I could) so I like to fake the look of linen by using bleached drop cloths. Yes, you read that right! I will go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy two 6X9 or 9X12 drop cloths (depending on the size of my windows), bleach them, wash and dry them, and hang them up using curtain ring clips. They look amazing and they're so much cheaper!

Pinch Pleated Curtains:

5. Hang an antique door or sophisticated sliding barn doors.

A beautiful antique door or a pair of sliding barn doors in place of a bathroom or closet door makes a huge impact on a room! If you're lucky enough to find an antique door at a flea market, snatch it up! Or you can build your own barn door (it's not as hard as you think!) and buy a barn door kit on Amazon here. Adding this element to your room is a bit of a project, but it is well worth it!

6. Choose your fabrics wisely.

The fabrics on your bed will really make a difference in defining your French country style room. Fabric like cotton and linen, like I mentioned before, are key. Fabric that are light in weight and color make the room fell welcoming, inviting, comfortable and elegant. Don't forget to pile those pillows on and toss a chunky knit throw over the bed, too!

French Style Bedding:

7. Pepper your room with flowers.

Florals are essential for French country decor, especially in French country bedroom! They add a beautiful touch to any room, but in this particular style, it's a must. Roses, peonies, lavender…just about any flower you love will do. And when the seasons change, it's so much fun to switch your florals to match the time of year! I love to add pumpkins and hydrangeas in the fall, and evergreens in the winter. I use really well made fake florals (Hobby Lobby has great flowers!), but if you're brave enough and have the budget for real flowers, more power to you!

8. Fake a fireplace.

I have always, always wanted a fireplace in my bedroom! Unfortunately, it's rare to find them in modern American homes. If you're lucky enough to have a bona fide fireplace in your bedroom, I am super jealous! But if you're like most of us and don't have a fireplace in your room, you can fake the look by buying or building a faux mantle. I recently added a faux mantle to my bedroom and I can't tell you how much I love it (don't worry, you'll see it in a blog post coming soon!).

9. Add a touch of rustic charm with distressed furniture.

Distressed furniture is also a big element in French country style design. This can be the same vintage or antique piece that you rescue and refinish or paint! Remember, rustic meets refined is the trademark of French country style, and distressed furniture is one way to add that look very easily.

10. Don't forget a bit of bling.

Touches of gold or silver adds that hint of effortless elegance into a French country bedroom. Add a mirrored pair of picture frames or some mercury glass candlesticks to your faux mantle to add that hint of bling. Or you could glam it up big time with mirrored side tables or a gilded headboard! The possibilities are endless–just add bling!

11. Hang a chandelier.

Whether it's rustic wood or dripping with crystals, a chandelier is a perfect finishing touch for a French country bedroom. This is one element that I am dying to add to my bedroom but so far my husband has blackballed the idea. He is convinced that if we don't have a ceiling fan in our bedroom, he's going to shrivel up and die. One day, I will wear him down and get my chandelier!

French Country Chandelier Options:

12. Create an intimate seating area.

I have always loved the idea of a seating area in my bedroom. Even if you have just a small corner, you can create a beautiful little area to sit and have a cup of coffee in the morning or do your quiet time while the kids nap. You can find a chair at a thrift store and refinish it or you can buy a pretty little French style chair and place a small table next to it. Add a little lamp, some books and a vase of flowers and you have a comfortable, cozy, inviting spot to relax and enjoy your own French country bedroom!

Perfect French Country Chairs:

Whether you like your French country style bedroom more rustic or gilded to the max, incorporating these easy essential elements will help you create the look you're hoping for!

How have you added touches of French country to your bedroom? What would you like to do next?

Bedroom Theater Room

Bedroom Theater Room

The idea of having a home theater used to be reserved for the wealthy. After all, this type of luxury and opulence typically came with a steep price tag. But fortunately, this is no longer the case. Affordable technology has now made it a viable option for homeowners on nearly any budget. With the right DIY attitude and a little ingenuity, you can turn a spare room into your own personal movie viewing haven with these home theater ideas!

Use Your Attic

Choosing the optimal location for your home theater setup is essential. Ideally, it will be isolated from the rest of your home to minimize outside noise and disturbances. Therefore, an attic tends to work great.

Or Your Basement

A basement can also work well. Not only is it separated from other living areas, but there are often few to no windows, which is perfect for creating an intimate movie-watching feel.

Or a Spare Bedroom

If an attic or basement are off the table, a spare bedroom is an easy option. Just try to choose a location with minimal background noise. Otherwise, you may need to invest in soundproofing.

Install Curtains or Blinds to Reduce Outside Light

The ideal home theater setup will have little or no outside light. But if this isn't an option, you can always install floor-length curtains or blinds to optimize your viewing experience.

Incorporate Soft Lighting

Want to create home theater lighting like you see in real movie theaters? Stick with soft lighting on the walls and low voltage, recessed lighting trim on the ceiling. This helps create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Use a Cable Management Box

Noticing a mess of unruly cables in the corner can distract from your movie experience. Use a cable management box to organize auxiliary cables, speaker cables, and HDMI cables.

Create a Fiber Optic Star Ceiling

If you're looking to go beyond the ordinary, fiber optic lights will create a one-of-a-kind experience that guests won't soon forget. You can buy these in kits that are priced by square footage.

Add Acoustic Panels

Using acoustic panels optimizes the audio quality by eliminating echo and reverb. The best part is that they come in a variety of styles, colors and designs, and can be purchased in kits to save money.

Install Surround Sound Speakers

Sound is everything. It makes movies feel more immersive and adds to the overall ambience. Investing in surround sound speakers is the way to go and ensures that the sound hits you from all angles. Place floor-standing tower speakers toward the front and place other speakers in bookshelves, on walls, or on the ceiling throughout the rest of the room.

Try an Open Furniture Concept for Larger Spaces

If space isn't an issue, you can opt for open furniture for a clean, modern look. It's also perfect for packing in plenty of friends and family.

Go with Lounge Chairs

Lounge seating is another idea that will make for an extremely pleasurable experience. This allows you to lay back and sprawl out for added comfort.

Use Leather Seating for Smaller Spaces

Dealing with limited space? You can still create a luxurious feel by using leather furniture for small home theater seating. This helps you maximize a small space and makes it feel more comfortable.

Install Row Seating

Row seating allows you to get the most out of smaller spaces and is fairly affordable. Some features you can find include cupholders, armrests, reclining positions and even USB charging ports.

Opt for Floor Seating and Pillows

Want insanely comfortable home theater furniture that fits a tighter budget? You can always go with floor seating and pillows. It's affordable, and you can move seating around with ease.

Stash Pillows and Blankets in Large Baskets

Getting cozy and comfortable with pillows and blankets during your favorite flick is great. But where do you store these items afterward? A large basket is perfect and will keep your home theater neat and tidy.

Use Curtains to Separate Adjacent Rooms

Will your home movie theater be next to neighboring rooms? You can easily create separation by installing floor length curtains. Again, deep red tends to work well for a color scheme.

Decorate with Your Favorite Movie Posters

Set the theme and add flair by decorating the room with some of your favorite movie posters.

Use an Ottoman for Odds and Ends

You'll may also need a place to store remotes, mobile devices, and gaming controllers. An ottoman is perfect for storing these odds and ends and prevents the space from becoming cluttered.

Include a Concession Stand

If you really want a realistic feel, why not have your own concession stand? Pack it with all of your favorites for quick access to delicious treats while watching a movie.

Still fantasizing about your own home movie theater? These tips will show you how to make that a reality. You don't need a massive budget or even a huge space to make it work. It's simply a matter of using your creativity and imagination to produce a home theater setup that's all your own.

Consider fitting a wall of shelving to keep books, paperwork and accessories neatly in one place (above). In an open-plan space, linen curtains can be hung from a rail attached to the ceiling to provide a sense of privacy. 10 Fun Ideas for a Bedroom Makeover

    CC0/Pexels/Pixabay

Giving your bedroom a fun makeover not only breathes new life into your space but it also helps bring things up-to-date. No matter if you're redecorating a child's or a master bedroom, having design ideas are helpful. Here are ten fun ideas for a bedroom makeover that will help inspire your project.

    Use a Statement Art Piece

When thinking about bedroom designs and ideas, the addition of a statement art piece helps tie everything together. Use of this piece of art can also serve as the room's inspiration and focal point. Place it over the headboard or dresser.

    CC0/DarthZuzanka/Pixabay

    Don't Be Afraid of Patterns

Incorporation of patterns can involve the use of wallpaper on one or malls walls, as well as fabrics. The trick is not to use too much. If you're going to use it on the walls, then sprinkle in more patterns on pillows and a bed skirt.

    CC0/J4U/Pixabay

    Bring in Your Personal Style

Why does a bedroom have to be one whereby only bedroom furnishings are the mainstays? Instead, fun elements should be included when thinking about design ideas for master bedroom or other bedrooms. Include personal treasures, as well as photographs depicting your interests.

    CC0/ErikaWittlieb/Pixabay

    Focus on Your Favorite Colors

When you're working on this bedroom makeover, why not focus on your favorite color? For example, you could think about purple bedroom design ideas or decorating a blue bedroom if those are your favorite colors.

    CC0/Pexels/Pixabay

    Incorporate Pops of Color

Sometimes a fun bedroom makeover just needs pops of color. Coming up with ideas for a bedroom makeover could include painting an accent wall or introducing pops of color by painting a section of the wall along the bottom of the room a deeper color.

    CC0/LynnB/Pixabay

    Check out Your Window Treatments

Your window treatments say a lot about your bedroom design. Therefore, when you're coming up with ideas for bedroom designs, don't discount this area of the room. Think about dramatic swags, simple valances, floor-to-ceiling panels or sheers. The possibilities are endless.

    CC0/JamesDeMers/Pixabay

    What's on Your Floor?

Your bedroom ideas must include a floor treatment. Even if you already have carpeting down, it doesn't hurt to add pops of color and pattern on your flooring with throw rugs or a larger area rug. In doing so, you'll change the entire look of the room.

    CC0/DarthZuzanka/Pixabay

Make Your Furniture Pieces Stand Out

Instead of picking out pieces of furniture that are practical, which they of course should be, select pieces that also stand out. They should reflect your taste, personality and the overall theme of the room. If you're trying to match the room with design ideas for house, consider tying the furniture into the rest of the house.

    CC0/StockSnap/Pixabay

    Make Creative Use of Lighting

Typically, a bedroom has one overhead light and two lamps on nightstands on either side of the bed. That seems pretty standard. Why not change things up with creative use of lighting? Add a chandelier over your reading nook, use a series of task lights over your desk area and install pendant lights on either side of the bed.

    CC0/ChellyRika/Pixabay

    Always Choose Drama

When decorating a fun bedroom, always choose dramatic effects over those that are down-played. If you're working with a one-bedroom studio flat, you'll find this is especially true because you're using limited space. Therefore, don't be afraid to bring in dramatic pieces of art, fabric, pottery or other elements that liven up the space.
